Summary

The story starts with pregnant 18-year-old Kerry being admitted to a woman's shelter. 
She explains her story: she had run away from her alcoholic mother and accepted the offer of her teacher to temporarily move in with him. They had an illegal relationship which started consensual, but things turned darker when she became pregnant and he turned violent. (1.1)

With the help of social workers she finds a small apartment (which comes with a free cat), supported by social welfare payments for as long as she can't work. (1.2) She gives birth to Ruby, and goes on her first job search. (1.3)

She has troubles finding work since she never finished her formal school education and has no work experience, until finally a company expresses interest in hiring her. Her new boss is a slimy man but given her situation she accepts the job offer. (1.4)

She doesn't feel comfortable at her workplace but gives it her all anyway, while her boss keeps making advances. Kerry feels ambivalent about her boss's strange behavior. At times she feels uncomfortable, but she's also appreciating his compliments after a lifetime of feeling unloved.
She finds an ancestry website and takes a DNA test out of curiosity and because her only known family is her mother, but doesn't expect to find out anything interesting. (1.5)

On the company's anniversary party she gets closer to her boss. Despite Ramona's warnings to not drink too much, Kerry gets so drunk that she has a blackout. (1.6)
She barely remembers what happened that night, but when she finds out she's pregnant a few months later, it is clear that there's only one possible father.

She blackmails her boss for money and a recommendation letter that would help her find a new and better job despite her bad start. (1.7) Jade is born two years after half-sister Ruby. (1.8)

Unexpectedly, Kerry gets a mail from a man who found her through the ancestry site she took a DNA test for long ago, and claims to be her father. Unsure whether she can trust him she decides to contact her mother again, for the first time after she ran away from home.
She finds her mother in rehab. Her mom confirms the man's story, but she and Kerry fight again and Kerry knows they won't see each other again. (1.9)

Cautious but curious and hopeful, Kerry meets her "new" father in a public place. They get along well, and she introduces him to his granddaughters, who are now pre-schoolers (1.10) and shine in dance classes for their age group. (1.11, 1.12)

The family moves into a (slightly) bigger apartment and Kerry has a short run-in with Ruby's father, her old highschool teacher. (1.13) They adopt two young cats because they initially had to leave their old cat Richie behind when moving, but Richie follows them and now they have three cats. (1.14)
